Recently, one of our apprentice mechanics, Julia, took this spirit to the next level by volunteering with Ship4Good, a not-for-profit organisation dedicated to protecting and restoring our oceans.
A new challenge volunteering with Ship4Good
Earlier this October, Julia was offered an opportunity of a life-time through Ship4Good. To join the crew aboard the Steve Irwin, the former Sea Shepherd vessel now repurposed for marine conservation. Ship4Good’s mission is clear: tackle marine debris and pollution, starting with clean-up operations around the Great Barrier Reef. For Julia, it was a chance to use her mechanical skills in a new environment, working alongside a mobile plant mechanic and a marine engineer to prepare the ship for its first voyage.
Hands on work and team spirit
“What inspired me to work on the Sea Shepherd was the opportunity to use my mechanical skills in a completely different environment while contributing to something meaningful,” Julia shared. “I’ve always been drawn to hands-on work and understanding how different systems and machinery come together, and this project offered the chance to do that on a much larger scale.”
Each day began with a team check-in, followed by maintenance, inspections, and plenty of learning about the ship’s complex systems. From fire control to water supply, Julia found the work challenging but rewarding. The highlight? Getting the ship’s fire system operational after overcoming a series of hurdles. A true testament to teamwork and perseverance.
Making a real difference
Beyond the technical work, she found the experience deeply meaningful. “What motivated me the most was knowing that our work wasn’t just about fixing equipment. It was helping prepare this ship that will be used to protect and clean our oceans. It showed me how my trade can make a real difference beyond the usual jobsite, and that’s something I really found rewarding.”
The sense of community on board was just as important. The crew brought together people with different skills and backgrounds, all united by a shared purpose. “Working with other people on the ship was incredible. Everyone had different skills and experiences, and we all relied on each other to get tasks done. The crew was so nice and welcoming which made being away from home a lot easier.”
Julia describes the experience in three words: “Rewarding, educational, meaningful.”
