When we embarked on our journey to tackle the issue of dust suppression, little did we know the profound impact it would have on the industry and the recognition we would receive for our efforts.
The compact dust filtration system
Our compact dust filtration system is having a significant impact on the profiling industry. This system was developed out of necessity encountered while working in Sydney’s underground tunnels, including the NorthConnex and the Rozelle interchange project over the past 8 years. Our profiling team faced significant challenges in suppressing dust generated by sandstone bases, which traditionally required an additional large, slow, and unreliable machine to operate alongside the profiler, presenting notable safety risks and spatial constraints.
Determined to make progress, we collaborated with an engineering company to design a de-duster – an advanced dust filtration system. The first underground prototype was developed and built within six months and was a tremendous success during its trial. It doubled productivity and significantly mitigated safety risks by efficiently filtering dust generated by the sandstone and eliminating plant on plant and plant on people incidents. It also eliminated the substantial cost of having a second machine onsite and eliminated a worker on foot. This success led to the creation of a second unit.
Two years ago, recognising the increasing concern over silica exposure, we committed to developing a compact dust filtration system for aboveground works, which turned out to be a bit trickier than anticipated. The design needed to be different from the underground model, so it didn’t impede movement or hang off the back of the machine. It took about 12 months of refinement to get this new system operational, which it has been since February 2024.

“Our dust filtration system is a game-changer, sparking industry-wide change, with manufacturers now developing similar systems and setting new standards for the profiling industry.”
Industry impact and recognition
The impact of our innovation extends beyond our projects. This technology has positioned us as leaders in the industry, especially amid recent changes in silica laws aimed at protecting workers from respirable crystalline silica dust exposure. An assessment by OHMS Hygiene confirmed that our system keeps all personal samples well below the Workplace Exposure Standard for respirable crystalline silica.
Our efforts have also received recognition, winning AfPA’s NSW/ACT state and National Safety Initiative awards, highlighting our dedication to safety excellence and pioneering role in the industry.
Our dust filtration system is a game-changer, sparking industry-wide change, with manufacturers now developing similar systems and setting new standards for the profiling industry. As we continue to lead and inspire, we remain dedicated to pushing the boundaries of what is possible, ensuring a safer and better future for all.
