Runway upgrade enhances airport’s infrastructure

The Alice Springs Airport project was a collaborative effort between Bitu-mill and our client to enhance the runway and apron through precise overlay profiling works. Our Road Maintenance Airport Profiling team deployed two 2m Wirtgen cold milling machines, specifically set up to remove longitudinal waves from the existing asphalt runway pavement. By utilising advanced 3D machine control, we ensured the removal of only the minimum necessary asphalt, delivering a cost-effective solution for our client while maintaining the highest quality standards.

Our team’s commitment to precision and detail is evident in the smooth tarmac now in place at Alice Springs Airport. The profiling work involved processing approximately 20,000 tonnes of material, which was performed efficiently, often during night hours to minimise disruption to airport operations. Using 3D control allowed us to achieve accurate levels, ensuring the new overlay required the least amount of asphalt possible.

In line with our sustainable practices, the material profiled during the project was recycled and reused, highlighting our commitment to environmental responsibility. The successful completion of this project reflects our technical expertise, meticulous approach, and brings tangible benefits to the Alice Springs community by enhancing the airport’s infrastructure.
