BildGroup, in collaboration with our clients, delivered a significant upgrade to Barwon Heads Road between Settlement Road and Reserve Road as part of the overall improvement project for Major Roads Projects Victoria (MRPV). This particular stage, which focused on duplicating 1.8 kilometres of road from Marshalltown Road to Reserve Road, has made the journey much safer and more predictable for drivers, cyclists, and pedestrians, helping to reduce congestion and improve traffic flow.
The project included the addition of two lanes and a 1.8-metre bike lane for each carriageway. New signalised intersections, complete with VESI public lighting, were constructed at Marshalltown Road and Reserve Road. Major culvert structure works were also carried out at Marshall Drain. A 3.0-metre shared user path and safety barriers were installed along the entire alignment, along with four new indented PTV bus stops.
The project featured extensive stormwater drainage using recycled plastic pipes and backfill materials, a water-sensitive urban design with open swales, plus soft landscaping and planting to reduce the environmental impact. Utility relocations and protections involved HV and LV power lines, communications networks, gas, water, and sewer services.
Coordination with other MRPV delivery packages and key stakeholders, including an aged care facility, was key. The project demonstrated expertise in deep lift asphalt pavement construction, pavement rehabilitation, traffic signals, public lighting installation, traffic management at busy intersections, service relocations, and effective liaison with sensitive stakeholders and returned asset owners.
The upgrade has improved community connectivity and made intersections safer with road safety barriers. The outstanding water-sensitive road design and the preservation of a cultural heritage building were also notable successes.
The total value of this project was $46 million and was completed three months ahead of schedule in March 2023.
