BildGroup’s sports fields and surfaces team was honoured to undertake the Eric Boardman Athletics Track Reconstruction Project on behalf of our client. This project involved demolishing the existing natural grass track and associated infrastructure and replacing it with a state-of-the-art athletics track that will serve the community for years to come.
The project involved a comprehensive overhaul, starting with the demolition and removal of the existing natural grass track and surrounding infrastructure. During the bulk earthworks phase, we encountered unsuitable ground conditions that required remediation of the clay base. This involved spreading and mixing hydrated lime into the clay subgrade, ensuring a solid foundation for the new track. A 300mm crushed rock pavement provided the platform for the new asphalt profile.
To address historical drainage issues, new stormwater infrastructure was installed within the track and turf areas, ensuring effective water management on the site. We also added concrete tiered seating along the western edge of the track and poured a concrete footpath around the perimeter to provide multiple access points and viewing areas for spectators.
The track itself was surfaced with two layers of asphalt, totalling 50mm thick. Surfacing of the track was performed using Beynon’s BSS 300 “sandwich” system. This system is WA certified and is renowned for its performance and durability. We also installed synthetic grass and natural turf areas, along with irrigation systems to keep the turf infield in pristine condition.
Additionally, we incorporated various sports infrastructure elements, including areas for hammer throw, discus, shot put, long/triple jump, water jump, and high jump. We also completed fencing works, concrete paving, kerb installation, and line marking to ensure the track met WA-approved standards.
With practical completion achieved in May 2024, the new Eric Boardman Athletics Track now provides countless opportunities for the Hume City Council community to enjoy sports and recreation.
