3D control system allows precision and efficiency

BildGroup’s NSW and QLD teams took on the critical task of sandstone profiling for the new WestConnex M5 tunnel project. This project required meticulous work, given the significant tonnes of sandstone that needed milling. To ensure precision and efficiency, WestConnex engineers opted for the advanced Leica 3D machine control system for profiling. Our in-house surveying team expertly set up this 3D system on two profilers, optimising level control to maximise productivity.

The profiling work spanned 2 kilometres and was executed under stringent safety standards. Our team operated in challenging conditions, maintaining 24-hour shifts to keep the project on track. Thanks to the 3D control system, we achieved a higher level of productivity compared to traditional excavation methods. The project was delivered ahead of schedule, with the profiled sandstone directly loaded into trucks and repurposed for civil construction work above ground. This approach not only streamlined the process but also ensured that the materials were effectively reused, contributing to the project’s overall efficiency and sustainability.
