Stage 2 upgrade

Bitu-mill’s profiling team played a crucial role in the Monash Freeway Upgrade Stage 2 (MFU2) project. Having completed similar projects, we completed centre median removal, deep lift patching, and pre-stripping excavation. These efforts paved the way for an additional 36 kilometres of new lanes on the Monash and Princes Freeway, significantly enhancing commuting efficiency.

Using advanced technology like the Wirtgen Performance Tracker (WPT), we ensured precise management of profiled material to trucks, thereby mitigating risks around the chain of responsibility obligations. This innovation helped streamline operations and has made journeys safer and quicker for the approximately 470,000 daily freeway users.

We maintained a safe working site record throughout the project, logging over 21,000 hours without any Lost Time Incidents (LTIs) or Medical Treatment Incidents (MTIs). We also demonstrated a commitment to sustainability by recycling profiled asphalt for reuse in the newly laid asphalt, minimising environmental impact. Additionally, we introduced cutting-edge solutions such as a robotic line marker, reducing the need for surveyors on foot and enhancing overall project efficiency.

This project improved the State’s road infrastructure, benefiting the community by enhancing daily commuting experiences and ensuring long-term infrastructure reliability.

The project began in February 2020 and finished in August 2022 ahead of schedule.
