Pakenham Roads Upgrade

Building better roads and paving the way for a sustainable future

BildGroup’s civil infrastructure team played a key role in the broader upgrade of the Pakenham area, working between the Princes Freeway, McGregor Road, and Healesville Koo Wee Rup Road. The project involved duplicating McGregor Road, upgrading signalised intersections, widening entry and exit ramps, and improving drainage, lighting, and signage.

Coordination with adjacent projects and utility providers was essential, with works staged to minimise impact on peak traffic and sensitive stakeholders like shopping centres, retirement villages, and schools. Environmental considerations were also front of mind, with measures taken to manage local habitats protected within a Conservation Area.

As well as complex traffic staging, a standout feature of the project was the trial of “Coffee Concrete” in the construction of local Council footpaths. This innovative approach involved incorporating recycled coffee grounds processed as biochar into the concrete mix, reducing waste and supporting sustainability. The trial demonstrated our willingness to explore new ideas of sustainability that benefit both the environment and the community, paving the way for future use of recycled materials in civil construction.

The upgrade has increased vehicle storage and capacity, reduced congestion, and improved traffic flow for drivers, cyclists, and pedestrians. Early completion and value management initiatives, including recycled materials and design optimisations, delivered additional benefits. For the Pakenham community, the project means safer, more reliable journeys and a road network that supports growth and connectivity.
