Ross Reserve

Reconstruction project creates top-notch athletic facility for the community

BildGroup’s sports fields and surfaces team had the privilege of working with our client to bring the Ross Reserve Athletic Track Reconstruction Project to life. This project aimed to create an elite-level athletic facility for the enjoyment of both the local and wider community.

To address historically challenging ground conditions and high water table issues, our team collaborated closely with geotechnical engineers to undertake an extensive earthworks program, including significant cement and lime stabilisation.

The new design features a rubberised polyurethane ‘Sandwich’ system athletic track covering approximately 10,643 square metres, complemented by a 6,200 square metre natural turf infield catering to all throwing events. The completed track now meets World Athletics Certification Class 2 standards, ensuring it is ready for high-level competition and community use.

A comprehensive network of new drainage infrastructure was installed to manage stormwater runoff effectively, maintaining the track’s performance and longevity. In addition to the track, we replaced the aging bluestone and asphalt pathways with external concrete bleacher seating, allowing spectators to enjoy the action from well-positioned seating along nearly 200 metres of the track.

Other major elements of the construction included a fully automatic irrigation system, MyLapse timing sensors embedded within the track surface, concrete footpaths, retaining walls, and minor landscaping, resulting in a fully integrated facility.

We achieved practical completion in March 2024, meeting all deadlines and adhering to the highest standards. The new athletic track at Ross Reserve is a fantastic addition to the City of Greater Dandenong, offering a state-of-the-art facility for athletes and the community to enjoy.
